A 70-year-old woman who was kicked in the leg by an elephant was later beaten by the same wild animal.

Maya Murmu was collecting water in the village of Raifal in eastern India when a runaway elephant appeared out of nowhere and shocked her Thursday morning.

He later died of his injuries in hospital, said Lopamudra Nayak, an inspector at the Rasgovindpur police station.

The elephant came back that night as a 70-year-old carcass lay in its burial bush.

The elephant is believed to have traveled from Dalmatia to a wildlife sanctuary in Jharkhand, 200 kilometers from Raipal in Odisha’s Mayurbhanji district.
