Baghdad airport closed due to sandstorm

(ANSAMed) – BEIRUT, JUN 13 – The international airport of Baghdad, in Iraq, suspended operations today due to a new sandstorm, the tenth in less than two months.

Iraqi media reported this, according to which the international airport of Najaf, a Shiite holy city in the south of the country and an air hub for Shiite pilgrims from all over the world, suspended its activities this morning and then resumed them after a few hours.

Iraq is considered one of the countries most exposed to the effects of climate change.

This year the frequency of sandstorms has increased, caused by a series of factors linked not only to global dynamics but also to the mismanagement of the environment by national and local authorities over the last decades of Iraqi history.

A dozen sandstorms have occurred since April: one person died of suffocation and tens of thousands were hospitalized. (ANSAMed).
