Mo: US envoy to Beirut for dispute between Lebanon and Israel

(ANSAMed) – BEIRUT, JUN 13 – US envoy Amos Hochstein is expected today in Beirut, in charge of mediating between Lebanon and Israel for the definition of the maritime border between the two countries, in view of the division of the energy resources that exist off the coasts of the two countries, in a state of war since their birth as formally independent states more than 70 years ago. In recent days, the Lebanese armed movement Hezbollah, an ally of Iran, had threatened to launch a war against Israel due to the alleged violation of Lebanese maritime sovereignty.

A floating platform has begun in recent days, on behalf of Israel, the preparatory work for the extraction of natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean, in an area that Lebanon now claims as its own. In direct negotiations between the two countries and mediated by Hochstein, Lebanon initially made demands on the basis of claims formally sent to the UN. (ANSAMed).
