“The horrors inflicted on civilians in Mariupol, which fell under Russian control in May after a terrible siege,” will leave an indelible mark, even in generations to come, “High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said today.
“Between February and the end of April, Mariupol was probably the deadliest place in Ukraine,” he told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, presenting an updated report on the situation. “The intensity and extent of the fighting, the destruction”, the number of “deaths and injuries have strongly favored serious violations of international humanitarian law and serious violations of international human rights law,” she added.
Bachelet then recalled the “parents who had to bury their children, people who saw their friends commit suicide, families torn apart, all those who had to leave a beloved city without being sure to see it again”.
