    Tunisia: government thwarted assassination plan for President Saied

    (ANSA) – TUNIS, JUN 24 – “Various sources have confirmed the existence of an assassination plan for the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed”. The spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, Fadhila Khelifi, told the press, speaking of a thwarted attack and explaining that what emerged was threats aimed at affecting national security. The Interior Ministry “praised the efforts of the police forces who continue to work for the safeguarding of national security and the Presidency of the Republic”, the spokesperson said again, revealing that the police have foiled a terrorist attack on the 23rd. June 2022. It would be a “lone wolf” who had targeted a security unit deployed in front of one of the sensitive installations. The perpetrator was arrested and the murder weapon confiscated. Speaking of yesterday’s arrest of former premier Hamadi Jebali (2011-2013), without ever mentioning his name, the spokesperson confirmed the involvement of the charitable association “Namaa Tounes”, of which she is responsible, in a case of illegal foreign financing and money laundering. Khelifi assured that dubious financial transactions concerning the Namaa association as well as large transfers from abroad were identified which are not compatible with the declared activity. The son-in-law of the former politician, the subject of several investigations for unfair enrichment, who is currently on the run, is also being investigated in the same procedure. The spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior did not answer the question about the possibility of a link between the accusations against the Namaa association and the threats addressed to the President of the Republic.
