There are 920 probable cases in 33 countries severe acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in children. This is stated in the report of the World Health Organization.

“The detection of severe acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in children in five WHO regions is unusual, and the severe clinical consequences of some cases require detailed study,” the WHO said..

The disease is accompanied by elevated liver enzymes and in many cases gastrointestinal symptoms, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Note that the United Kingdom in April for the first time reported an outbreak of hepatitis of unknown origin in young children, at that time there were ten such cases. Subsequently, the number of detected cases exceeded 900, including due to retrospectively detected cases.

As of June, 45 children required liver transplantation, and 18 deaths were recorded. The source of infection and methods of transmission of the pathogen are being studied, common hepatitis viruses (A, B, C, D and E) have not been detected in these cases of diseases.

Most cases have been reported in Europe, including 267 in the UK. In addition, a third of all cases were detected in the United States.

The disease has also been identified in Argentina, Israel, and Japan. There are no known cases of such hepatitis in Ukraine.

Currently, no specialist can determine the exact cause of the outbreak. Some scientists attribute this to the coronavirus pandemic, its mutations and the weakening of the body.
