(ANSA) – BEIJING, JUN 25 – Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Hong Kong to participate in the celebrations on July 1st of the 25th anniversary of the return of the territories from the control of London to that of Beijing. The official Xinhua news agency reports, according to which Xi will also participate in “the inauguration ceremony of the sixth term of government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region” which will see the inauguration of John Lee as governor. For Xi it will be the first trip out of mainland China since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, precisely since the January 2020 visit he made to Myanmar.
The confirmation of Xi’s participation in the events of 1 July, anticipated in recent days by the Hong Kong media, came after two senior city officials tested positive for Covid-19, raising fears about the presence of state leaders for the celebrations of July 1, which include the swearing in of the city’s new leader on the anniversary of his 1997 handover from British rule. Secretary of Constitutional and Continental Affairs Erick Tsang and Governor’s Office Director Eric Chan tested positive for nucleic acid tests and subjected to isolation, according to a local government note released Thursday, the day when key officials from Hong Kong have entered the closed loop system. This is a security scheme whereby you can only travel between home and work in a private vehicle, undergo the daily test and spend a night in a quarantine hotel on the eve of the 1st of July anniversary.
