NATO does not agree with criticism about the level of assistance to Ukraine: what they answered

Ukraine can also count on a gradual transition to Western-style weapons, because its Soviet reserves are running out.

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana disagrees with the criticism that NATO does not help Ukraine enough to protect itself from Russian aggression. In his opinion, the role of the Alliance should be considered in conjunction with everything that the partners help.

He said this in an interview with European Pravda.

“We in NATO have an agreement on the “distribution of roles.” The Alliance as such provides Ukraine with non-lethal assistance, and the member states provide lethal weapons. In the end, what is more important for you: this distribution? Help for Ukraine? That’s why I advise my friends in Kyiv to take our help as a whole,” Geoanė said.

He noted that given the overall picture, Western democracies support Ukraine with weapons, in the field of protection against cyber attacks, countering disinformation, maintaining economic stability, and are already reserving money for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.

Mircea Geoană said that the Allies had deliberately assigned roles so that meetings of the “Ramstein format” to support Ukraine with weapons would not be coordinated through the Alliance.

“When we agreed on this distribution of tasks – the Alliance is working with non-lethal means, and the allies are providing military support to Ukraine – this decision was intentional. NATO is a risk-taking organization, and we must carefully avoid escalation and the possibility of war between Russia and NATO, which will not benefit anyone. With all due respect to Ukraine, but our number one task is to protect the billion people living in the NATO area. But I remind you that the recent meeting of the contact group on support for Ukraine was held here at NATO headquarters, before the ministerial meeting of the Alliance,” he said.

Mircea Geoana added that this also has additional advantages, as it allows avoiding unnecessary bureaucracy, and speed is now important for Ukraine.

“What is more important for you – to get what you need from us? Is it important which of us does what? I think that the main thing is to get fast and effective support in Ukraine’s war against Russia,” he summed up.

We previously reported that NATO would decide on a powerful response to Putin.

We also recall that Stoltenberg told what historic decisions to expect from the NATO summit.
