(ANSA) – MANAGUA, June 27 – The Nicaraguan Institute for Territorial Studies (Ineter) announced that the crater of the San Cristóbal volcano was the focus of explosions yesterday that caused a column of smoke 1,500 meters high and dispersion of ash and lapilli on three surrounding villages.
San Cristóbal is a 1,750 meter high stratovolcano, part of a complex of five of the same kind found in the Cordillera de Los Maribios in the Chinandega department (northwest).
In a statement Ineter specified that “due to the effect of the wind” the explosion covered “the communities of Las Grecias 3, Las Grecias 4 and the town of El Viejo with a layer of small ash”.
The phenomenon, the Institute then pointed out, was accompanied by a modest seismic activity that “must not alarm the population”, even if it is possible that explosions and throwings of ash and lapilli could be repeated in the next few hours.
The first major eruption of San Cristóbal is recorded in the history books in 1685, followed over the centuries by a continuous eruptive activity, but never in its region there have been any deaths or major destructions. (HANDLE).
