Japan, a cherry sold at auction for 280 euros

(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 28 – A single cherry of the most prized variety in Japan reached 40,000 yen, 280 euros, at the first auction of the year in the city of Hachinohe, in the north of the country. It is part of the Juno Heart quality, known for its sweet taste and palatability, developed by a research center affiliated with the Aomori Prefecture and considered a high-end gift item. To meet the standards, cherries of this species must measure more than 2.8 centimeters in diameter and have a sugar content of 20 degrees. They are also the largest cherries grown in Japan, with a minimum width of 31mm, and sold under the name ‘Aomori Heartbeat’. Among the approximately 50 packages that were on sale, containing 15 of the finest fruits, a box was sold for 600,000 yen, equal to 4,220 euros, surpassing the record of 450,000 yen last year. “These are fruits that cannot be found anywhere else,” said the winner, Kyoko Nagatsuka, president of a fruit and vegetable conglomerate in Chiba prefecture, on the outskirts of Tokyo, at the end of the city auction, explaining that the fruits will be available in your shop near the capital.
