Government of Norway prevented a Russian mining company from transporting goods to Svalbard via the mainland. The application was rejected on June 15. At the Storskog border station, 20 tons of Russian goods were stopped on their way to the mining town of Barentsburg on Svalbard.

This is reported by the publication NRK.

The application was filed by the mining company Trust Arktikugol and the Russian Embassy sent a letter to the Norwegian Foreign Ministry, asking for an exception to the sanctions.

The Russians’ letter says they fear a humanitarian crisis if the goods are not allowed through Storskog.

The Norwegian Foreign Ministry said that the same laws apply in Barentsburg as in the rest of Svalbard.

Then Consul General of the Russian Federation Sergei Gushchev said that the situation is stable and Russian diplomats are working on obtaining benefits for goods “for humanitarian reasons.”

Zelensky asked Norway for weapons, gas and new sanctions against Russia

On March 30, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky turned to Norway and asked for help in the war with Russia. According to him, Ukraine needs missile weapons, tough sanctions against the Russian Federation, as well as an alternative to Russian gas.

“We have no common borders, but we have a common neighbor who denies all our common values,” he said.

According to the President, the first and most important thing that Ukraine needs is weapons:

“I want to clearly state what we need. In particular, anti-ship weapons – HARPUN missiles, as well as anti-aircraft systems – NASAMS. In addition, we need weapons to destroy armored vehicles, artillery systems.”

Zelensky also stressed that sanctions are needed – “the only means that can encourage Russia to seek peace.”

“It is important that European companies do not help this military machine, which has already killed thousands of our people, completely destroyed dozens of cities. Not a single crown, please, not a single euro of taxes in aid of Russian aggression! For example, your company MOTUS TECH and other companies must stop supporting Russia’s ability to destroy its neighbors. How can Russia be supplied with ship equipment when it uses its fleet to mine the sea and destroy any opportunity for free navigation?” – he said.

The head of state expressed the hope that the European Union, and Norway along with it, would close the possibility for Russian ships to use ports on the continent.

“The third point is that you are one of the most responsible suppliers of energy resources in the world… This contrasts sharply with the way Russia behaves when supplying energy resources. It is you who can make a decisive contribution to the energy security of Europe, providing the necessary resource for both the EU states, and for Ukraine. We have already started a dialogue on the supply of about 5 billion cubic meters of gas to Ukraine for the next heating season. I hope this will become the basis for our long-term cooperation in this area,” the president said.

Zelensky also called on Norway to participate in the post-war restoration of Ukrainian infrastructure.
