Belgium told how to end the war

Alliance countries will strengthen military presence in Europe

US President Joe Biden announced that America will increase its military presence in Europe due to Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine and threats to EU countries.

What is planned

  • Two more destroyers will be sent to the Rota naval base in Spain – there will be six in total;
  • two additional squadrons of fifth-generation F-35 fighter-bombers will be sent to the UK;
  • the headquarters of the 5th American army will be located in Poland;
  • an additional brigade will be transferred to Romania;
  • additional American units will appear in the Baltic countries;
  • in Germany and Italy, air defense units will be strengthened;
  • NATO countries individually will reinforce the eastern and southern borders of the Alliance.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that an increase in the number of NATO response forces will be carried out next year. The number will grow from 40 thousand to 300 thousand. As part of this procedure, heavy equipment and weapons will be deployed on the border with Russia, NATO forces will be distributed to protect specific sections of the eastern flank.

Aid to Ukraine from Germany

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that NATO will supply weapons to Ukraine for as long as necessary. In addition to weapons, members of the Alliance will continue to supply Ukraine with financial and humanitarian assistance.

“It’s good that the countries that are gathered here, but many others are doing their part so that Ukraine can defend itself – by providing funds, humanitarian aid, and also by providing weapons that Ukraine urgently needs,” Scholz said.

Britain on the possibility of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss believes that long-term peace in Europe is possible only in the event of Russia’s defeat in Ukraine. According to her, negotiations can take place only after Ukraine wins the war.

“We have an obligation to achieve the defeat of Russia in Ukraine. We must do this for the sake of European security, freedom and democracy. This is the only way to achieve long-term peace in Europe. Some talk about the possibility of negotiations now, while Russia is still in Ukraine. But I think this is would bring false peace,” she said.

Truss noted that NATO allies “should learn from the past, such as the failure of the Minsk agreements, to ensure lasting peace in the region.”

“My message is that we must first defeat Russia and then negotiate,” she said.

NATO summit

The NATO summit will last until June 30. The new strategic concept of the Alliance, which is planned to be adopted at the summit, will include China, as well as a change in attitude towards Russia. The event will be attended US President Joe Biden. In addition to the NATO countries, Sweden and Finland, the prime ministers and presidents of Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea also confirmed their participation.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told reporters that Ukraine expects a “miracle” from the NATO summit, but immediately added that there were no prerequisites for this. What kind of miracle could happen, the minister did not say, noting only that the question concerns NATO’s position in relation to Ukraine.
