Kenya calls for a UN investigation into the massacre of migrants in Melilla

(ANSA) – NAIROBI, June 30 – The Kenyan delegation to the United Nations has addressed a letter to the Security Council asking for in-depth investigations into the incidents of June 24 last in Morocco that led to the death of 23 sub-Saharan migrants who tried to enter the Spanish enclave of Melilla.

Kenya Deputy Representative Mike Kiboino denounced the inhuman treatment of African migrants and urged the Council to act to protect those fleeing war and insecurity in their own country.

“What happened to migrants trying to enter the Spanish enclave of Melilla is a blatant violation of the United Nations resolution adopted two years ago to protect and uphold the human rights and freedom of Africans against the excessive use of force and other human rights violations by law enforcement agencies. Instead of being protected, they were attacked, “Kibonio said.

Kenya has asked the Rabat government to report anyone responsible for the killings. The Moroccan authorities, for their part, have stated that they will prosecute 65 of the migrants who were part of the mass attempt to enter the Melilla territory.

“We urge the European Union and the African Union to make every effort to ensure that the movement to Europe is safe and dignified,” Kibonio added. (HANDLE).
