Ukraine: EU publishes handbook for introducing children to school

(ANSA) – BRUSSELS, JUN 30 – The European Commission has published a practical manual to help Ukrainian children and young people to enter school from early childhood to upper secondary education in view of the next school year, starting in September. The document brings together essential educational principles and practices to support the inclusion of displaced children from Ukraine and is aimed at teachers, authorities and all stakeholders.

“Welcoming so many Ukrainian refugees to European schools and universities is an extraordinary opportunity to prepare young Ukrainians for their European journey. Ukraine can count on the EU to support and protect their children, so that they can rebuild their own Country. Our solidarity is a pillar of our partnership: present and future “, commented the vice president of the EU, Margaritis Schinas.

The guidelines are the result of a consultation with UNHCR, UNICEF, representatives of education ministries, partner organizations that met in peer learning events between March and June 2022 and with network experts who they work on the social dimension of education and training (Neset). “Our schools will remain a safe haven for all pupils, be they refugees or EU citizens”, underlined the EU Commissioner for Education, Mariya Gabriel.
