On the territory of the Suwalki corridor, located between the territory of Belarus and Kaliningrad (Russia), local residents join the Lithuanian volunteer movement “Streltsy”.
It is noted that the Suwalki corridor will become the first line of defense if Russian troops enter the territory of Lithuania.
“How can you trust Russia? With our history? My family is here. I built this house with my bare hands,” said one of the locals who joined the Lithuanian militia.
The commander of the 4th Regional Rifle Command, Egidius Papetskis, said that after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the number of people wishing to join the militia has increased dramatically.
“Currently, there are about 12,000 volunteers. And this number is increasing tenfold every month,” he said. “Since the first days of the war in Ukraine, the number of recruits wishing to join has increased from 10-12 to more than 100 people a month. We remember the Soviet occupation, and we no longer like being occupied. We are free people,” Papetskis said.
Will there be a war between Russia and Lithuania?
Russia is unlikely to consider such an option. Moreover, US State Department spokesman Ned Price has already stated that America is ready support Lithuania in the event of Russian military aggression.
According to Price, the United States adheres to the fifth article of the North Atlantic alliance, which states that an attack on one member of NATO is an attack on all. The United States also approved the economic measures taken against the aggressor country.
Political scientist Igor Petrenko is sure that Russia will not dare to start a war with Lithuania.
“The State Department has clearly stated its position. Russia understands this, and it has nothing to answer. The Kremlin, out of impotence, is trying to raise rates, but no one pays attention to his statements,” the expert says.
Former site “Today” informedthat at a night meeting with Putin they discussed the war with Lithuania. Also we wrotethat the United States gave Russia an “iron” warning because of the threats to Lithuania.
