(ANSA) – BEIJING, 01 JUL – China accuses Great Britain of maintaining a “colonial mentality” on Hong Kong and rejects the criticisms of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, stating that “there is no so-called commitment” by Beijing on the former colony after its restitution on July 1, 1997. “Hong Kong belongs to China and no outside force has the right to intervene,” foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian thundered. “Britain has no sovereignty, governance or oversight after its return and there is no so-called commitment,” he added.
Johnson yesterday accused Beijing of failing to honor its commitments on democratic rights. (HANDLE).
