From ‘slavery’ to ‘involuntary relocation’, proposed in Texas

(ANSA) – ROME, JUL 03 – In Texas, a group of educators, as part of the updating in the State of programs for elementary schools and specifically for classes of pupils between 7 and 8 years old, proposed that replaced the term slavery, precisely in the context of the description of the historical phenomenon in the US, with the expression ‘involuntary relocation’. The intervention is part of the ongoing debate in American institutions on how to address and analyze the racial issue in schools. The proposal, however, was rejected by the competent Texan commission, on the grounds that “our commitment is to the truth and this includes an accurate description of historical events”. In particular, a Democratic member of the commission, Aicha Davis, explained to the Wawshington Post the reasons for her immediate reaction against the proposal: “I cannot lend my support to anything that describes slave trafficking as an ‘involuntary relocation’. I can give my support to anything that detracts from that path. ” (HANDLE).
