The UK wants to follow Canada’s example and confiscate the assets of Russians in the UK in order to transfer them to Ukraine.

This was stated by British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, writes The Guardian.

Details

As noted, more than 120,000 homes in Ukraine were destroyed during the Russian invasion, creating a need for billions of dollars in revenue for the country’s economic recovery and transformation into a Europe-oriented economy.

Truss said she supported the idea that the government could confiscate frozen Russian assets in the UK and redistribute them to the victims of the war in Ukraine:

“I support this concept. We are looking at it very carefully. Canadians have actually just passed a law. This is an issue that we are working on together with the Department of the Interior and the Department of the Treasury, but I certainly agree with the concept. We just need to understand details.”

The initiative would likely require legislation, she said, but not necessarily.

According to the publication, the seized funds can be transferred either to individuals as reparations, or to the Ukrainian state. The UK can currently suspend Russian assets under the Economic Crimes Act for 56 days and extend the suspension for another 56 days. During this period, the owner of the asset cannot receive any benefit from it.

In addition, Truss noted that the UK will position itself as a key partner for Ukraine in the recovery process:

“The restoration of Ukraine after Russia’s aggressive war will be a symbol of the power of democracy over autocracy. It will show Putin (Russian President Vladimir Putin – ed.) that his attempts to destroy Ukraine have only created a stronger, more prosperous and more united nation.”

The minister also said that the UK strongly supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine and will remain on the side of our country as it becomes “a strong, prosperous and advanced democracy.”

“We led the way in supporting Ukraine during the war and will continue to lead the way in supporting the Ukrainian government’s reconstruction and development plan,” she said.

At the same time, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, also spoke on this topic, saying that the Russians who were under sanctions should pay for the restoration of Ukraine.

“Because they are connected to the Kremlin regime. This is our goal, which we tell our allies about,” he said.

Earlier, the British government announced new sanctions that hit the inner circle of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
