The Republic of Tatarstan may very soon secede from Russia.

Political strategist and writer Mikhail Sheitelman told TV presenter Oleg Panyuta about this for the author’s project “Explaining Panyuta” on the Ukraine 24 YouTube channel.

“Tatarstan can simply run away from Russia. Tatarstan is now hanging by a thread, Putin is disappearing, and the sanctions remain, for example,” he said.

Panyuta added that Tatarstan was the first to adopt the Declaration on the Sovereignty of the Republic.

“Yes, they have a direct path to the exit because they are economically self-sufficient, and they don’t need sanctions, they need their own. And Turkey is the first to recognize Tatarstan, just on the same day. And it comes to NATO partners, says, by the way, guys, admit it, we let Finland in, please recognize our guys. Everyone admits it,” Sheitelman said.

It should be noted that the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tatarstan have delineated powers between authorities. The corresponding agreement was ratified by the State Duma of Russia. The document provides that the government of the Russian Federation and the Cabinet of Ministers of Tatarstan conclude an agreement on joint resolution of issues related to the economic, environmental, cultural and other characteristics of the republic.

Until 2000, the Republic of Tatarstan had legislative norms that contradicted the Constitution of the Russian Federation and proclaimed the republic a sovereign state. In 1990-1994, Tatarstan, according to its legislation and de facto, was an independent state. On August 30, 1990, the Declaration on the Sovereignty of Tatarstan was adopted, according to which it is not a subject of either the Soviet Union (USSR) or the Russian Federation (RSFSR) and, as a subject of international law, concludes agreements and alliances with Russia and other states. On October 24, 1991, the resolution of the Supreme Council of the TSSR “On the Act of State Independence of the Republic of Tatarstan” was adopted.
