(ANSA) – BRUSSELS, JULY 04 – Green light from the Frontex board of directors to the Latvian Aija Kalnaja as interim executive director of the agency. The executive management team will focus on strengthening Frontex’s operational activities and continuing its support to Member States and partners outside the European Union.
The agency is currently employing over 2,200 officers and staff at and beyond the EU’s external borders in 17 operations.
Kalnaja becomes the new executive director after the resignation of the French Fabrice Leggeri after investigations into various violations in which the agency was allegedly involved in the refoulement of migrants in Greece. (HANDLE).
