Hong Kong: positive deputy to Covid after photos taken with Xi

(ANSA) – BEIJING, 04 JUL – Steven Ho, deputy of the main pro-Beijing party present in the Hong Kong parliament, has fueled fears about the health of President Xi Jinping after testing positive for Covid-19 just two days before the meeting had with the Chinese leader, on a visit to the former British colony for the 25th anniversary of the return of the territories by London and for the inauguration of the new governor John Lee.

Ho, who tested positive for the virus on Saturday, reported that the tests had instead given a negative avoidance on Thursday, when he attended a meeting between local officials and Xi, whose health is among the most sensitive issues in China. On the occasion, several group photos were taken. “I didn’t just say ‘Hi President’, I also said ‘thank you for your hard work, President – wrote Ho on social media -. He gave me a nod. He was very friendly.”

The event, which was attended by more than 80 select people, took place in what was the president’s first trip out of mainland China in over two years, breaking a self-isolation that began in January 2020. Xi didn’t spend the night in Hong Kong, affected by a wave of about 2,000 infections a day, choosing instead to stay overnight in Shenzhen and return the next day for the celebrations of July 1st.

Selected personalities like Ho, who were supposed to meet Xi, had to undergo daily testing and quarantine at the hotel before the main events. The deputy said he missed the ceremony on Friday after the “uncertain” result of the swab. Subsequently, the confirmation of positivity albeit with moderately weak symptoms. (HANDLE).
