Covid: 380 new cases in China, outbreaks in Anhui and Jiangsu

(ANSA) – BEIJING, 04 JUL – On Sunday, China recorded 380 new cases of Covid-19 transmitted locally, of which 41 were confirmed and 339 asymptomatic, doubling the infections of the previous day and about 50 in mid-June.

The vast majority of infections, the National Health Commission reported, involve the provinces of Anhui and Jiangsu, both close to Shanghai. Local authorities have reset the lockdown in Lingbi, a county of over 1 million people in northeastern Anhui, and ordered a sixth round of mandatory testing for all residents of Si, another neighboring county with 760,000 residents.

Wuxi, a manufacturing center in the Yangtze Delta, has shut down operations in many public places, including shops and supermarkets, advising people to work from home and urging residents not to leave the city unless necessary.

Yiwu, the Chinese capital of small goods exports, has canceled flights to the capital Beijing for an unspecified period, the state network CCTV reported, citing anti-Covid prevention measures: Yiwu has reported three cases in the last week .

The surge in cases in China over the past two weeks will test President Xi Jinping’s administration’s attempts to ease draconian pandemic containment measures, including limits on travel and economic activity, as part of the controversial ‘zero’ policy -Covid ‘.

Last week, China cut its quarantine period for international travelers in half to one week, the first significant relaxation of restrictions nationwide since waves of the Omicron variant hit Shanghai and Beijing. However, the challenge to eliminate the novel coronavirus will increase with the arrival of more transmissible Covid sub-variants: Health researchers warned last week that cases of the BA.4 and BA.5 variants are on the rise.
