France: 35 children and 16 mothers repatriated from Syria camps

(ANSA) – PARIS, 05 JUL – France has repatriated 35 children and 16 mothers from camps in Syria where the families of suspected Islamic State jihadists were detained. This was announced by the Foreign Ministry in Paris.

“France today organized the return to the country of 35 French minors who were in camps in north-eastern Syria. This operation also includes the return of 16 mothers from these same camps”, a statement read, adding that the minors have been handed over to child protection services, while mothers will face legal proceedings.

Human rights groups have long urged the French government to bring home some 200 children who were brought to IS territory by their parents or who were born there during the years of fighting. They are detained in Kurdish-run camps in northeastern Syria, where malnutrition and disease abound. One of the largest and most overcrowded is Al-Hol, where on average two children die a week, according to a report by the Save the Children group last September. (HANDLE).
