German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has promised to provide long-term security guarantees to Ukraine, but they will not include automatic military assistance in the event of an attack.

The head of the German government made the corresponding statement on July 6 during a speech in the Bundestag, writes Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

According to him, Ukraine and other states are now discussing how exactly such guarantees might look like. It goes without saying, however, that they cannot be “conforming to Article 5 of the NATO Treaty”.

Rather, they need to be “adapted to the specific situation,” Scholz explained.

Article 5 of the treaty states that all NATO countries will support a NATO member country if it is attacked.

The publication notes that Scholz “did not become more specific”, but only explained that it is always possible to apply “highly effective sanctions” imposed on Russia by the EU, the United States and other Western countries after the invasion of Ukraine.

Recall that earlier President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded from the West a new system of security guarantees for Ukraine.

Scholz explained why Germany gives Ukraine few weapons

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that his state, for objective reasons, cannot send weapons to Ukraine with the same intensity as the United States does.

As Scholz noted, it is necessary to understand that there is a difference between Germany and a state like the States: the American authorities spend a lot on defense, invest a lot in it, and therefore have large stocks of weapons.

Earlier, Olaf Scholz said that Germany rejects a “world under dictation” on conditions unilaterally imposed by Moscow. Sanctions against Russia, he said, will remain in effect until the country reaches a “fair agreement” with Ukraine. The chancellor also encouraged the Ukrainians with a statement on EU enlargement.
