Tourism: Spain, sector GDP returns to pre-Covid levels

(ANSA) – MADRID, 06 JUL – The GDP of the tourism sector in Spain in 2022 could reach 98% of that of 2019, the last pre-pandemic year: this was reported in a note by Exceltur, the main association of tourism companies in the Iberian country .

This plausible prospect, adds the statement, is due to “the intense and unexpected increase in travel” recorded in the second quarter of the year despite the uncertainties linked to the international context. The GDP of the period April-June 2022 was higher than that of the same period of 2019 (+ 1.1%), according to Exceltur.

However, according to Spanish tourism companies, profits are not matching the levels of recovery in demand, due to the very high inflation that is currently being recorded. According to the Efe news agency, Exceltur also warns that it foresees “an important level of chaos” in several airports due to management problems of the expected high tourist flows.
