(ANSA) – BRUSSELS, JULY 06 – The gynecologist Jos Beek of Leiderdorp has generated at least 41 children by secretly using his own sperm during the fertility treatments offered to his patients. This is supported by new research, published by NLTimes. Beek was previously thought to have fathered ‘only’ 21 children. The study also revealed that the gynecologist was the carrier of a rare hereditary condition, which in some cases can lead to severe consequences (two babies died shortly after birth).
Beek – who died in 2019 – worked at the former Sint Elizabeth hospital in Leidedorp, which later became part of the Alrijne Zorggroep medical complex. The institute asked an independent commission led by Professor Didi Braat to investigate Beek after 21 individuals born from the treatments showed up at the hospital with DNA tests matching the gynecologist last year. “The oldest (known) child was born in 1975, the youngest in 1990,” Braat said. The women Beek treated had asked to be inseminated with sperm from an anonymous donor. The gynecologist, on the other hand, used his own sperm without telling them anything. The researchers could not find any traces of donors, which suggests Beek was the only sperm donor in his study. (HANDLE).
