Covid: Shanghai doubles cases, in Beijing obligation on vaccines

(ANSA) – BEIJING, 07 JUL – The cases of Covid-19 in Shanghai double in a single day and have risen to their highest levels since the end of May, fueling fears of new lockdowns, while in Beijing the mandatory vaccination becomes mandatory from 11 July for entry into the places and becomes the first Chinese city to adopt such a measure.

China’s financial hub announced that 54 locally transmitted infections were ascertained yesterday, including two detected outside quarantine. The city, which has around 26 million residents, has already ramped up its mass testing, with 10 districts (plus some areas of two more) out of a total of 16 having a three-day cycle of nucleic acid swabs underway. .

In Beijing, the decision on the mandatory vaccine was announced by the deputy director of the Municipal Health Commission Li Ang, among the measures that the capital intends to take for the prevention and control of the pandemic. The note, released online, does not specify whether those who received the anti-Covid vaccine abroad should be considered immunized given that China does not recognize foreign sera.

The municipality also invited the elderly, the category most at risk, to complete full vaccination coverage as soon as possible. The new directive comes as China grapples with the new Omicron sub-variant of the virus, which worries Shanghai (already subjected to a two-month strict lockdown until early June) and which has so far caused restrictions for millions of residents in Xi’an. , capital of Shaanxi.

Nationally, 338 new cases emerged on Wednesday with domestic transmission (there were 322 on Tuesday), of which 94 confirmed and including 39 from Anhui and 32 from Shanghai. According to updated data from the National Health Commission, asymptomatics amounted to 244, recorded overall in 10 provinces and regions. (HANDLE).
