(ANSA) – ROME, JULY 08 – The Nobel Peace Prize winner, the Filipina Maria Ressa, has lost the appeal against the conviction for cyber defamation. She made it known on her her news website Rappler.
Ressa and her former colleague Rey Santos Jr face long prison sentences, but the website reiterated that, against the conviction, “he will use all available legal remedies”.
Rappler regretted the decision that “weakens the ability of journalists to hold the government accountable.” “At stake is our democracy, whose strength is based on media that are neither threatened by the state nor intimidated by forces trying to silence critical voices,” Rappler said. (HANDLE).
