Spain: Sánchez launches new anti-inflation measures

(ANSA) – MADRID, JUL 12 – The Spanish government launches new measures to help families bear the burden of very high inflation, the current “great challenge” of the country according to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez: as announced by the president in Parliament, between the new measures envisaged include “extraordinary taxes” on the extra profits of large energy and financial companies, from which Madrid aims to generate 7 billion euros in two years, and reimbursements of 100% of the amounts of subscriptions to local rail transport managed by the state (“medium distance” routes and local trains in the main urban areas of the country), which will be valid from 1st September to 31st December.

The idea of ​​the government, therefore, is to make “fair” the sharing of the burdens on society deriving from the economic impact of the war in Ukraine, which is entailing, also due to the rising costs of energy raw materials, general repercussions on the cost of living of citizens. “We will not allow companies or individuals to take advantage of the crisis to amass more wealth, at the expense of the majority,” Sánchez said during the ‘state of the nation debate’ in Parliament.

The premier also announced, again for the period September-December 2022, a bonus of 100 euros per month for students over 16 who already benefit from study aid, therefore considered among the most disadvantaged as they belong to low-income families.

The measures announced today will be added to those already launched between March and June last, with validity until December 31st: among these, there is a discount of 20 euro cents per liter for fuels, the halving from 10% to 5% of the ‘VAT on electricity and a € 200 bonus for low-income families.
