Heat wave expected for today also in France and Great Britain after the surge in temperatures recorded on Sunday in most of the Iberian Peninsula with 40 degrees in Spain and Portugal. In the South of France a fire has destroyed 800 hectares of pine trees in Bordeaux since yesterday afternoon, prompting 150 residents to evacuate. Near the Dune of Pilat, the highest sand dune in Europe, another fire burned about 180 hectares of old pine trees.
About 6,000 campers were evacuated overnight as a precautionary measure, said firefighter Lieutenant Colonel David Annotel.
Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne called on government ministers to be prepared to deal with the aftermath of the heat wave, which is expected to last up to 10 days. “The heat affects people’s health very quickly, especially the most vulnerable ones,” her office told her.
“We expect a deterioration,” Clare Nullis, spokeswoman for the World Meteorological Organization, said Tuesday during a briefing in Geneva. “Accompanying this heat is drought. We have very, very dry soils,” she said.
