The Seismological Institute of Ecuador corrected the magnitude of the earthquake, which had its epicenter a few kilometers from the town of Simón Bolívar, in the province of Guayas, bringing it from 5.9 to 6.1.
The only victim of the earthquake was a 16-year-old young man hit by an electric discharge produced by a high-voltage cable that fell to the ground in the area of the epicenter.
Ecuadorian media confirmed that the quake was felt practically throughout Ecuador, from Guayaquil to Quito.
Esteban Hernández, a seismologist at the Geophysical Institute, explained to the newspaper Expreso that, despite its magnitude, the earthquake did not have a heavy death toll or damage “due to the depth of its hypocenter at almost 60 kilometers”.
