France: Macron, ‘the state is mobilized against fires’

(ANSA) – PARIS, JUL 15 – The French state is “mobilized” against the forest fires that have hit some areas of the country, in particular, the department of Gironde, near Bordeaux: Emmanuel Macron said, thanking the work of the firefighters fighting the flames but also the European partners for the help that came from Greece, Spain and Italy. “We are mobilized” and “we will continue to hold up”, declared the president on a visit to the French Operations Center for Crisis Management (Cogic) in Paris together with the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin. “We are experiencing an exceptional season for its hardness. Already, after a very dry spring – continued Macron – we have more than three times the number of burned woods compared to 2020”.

Across the Alps, 11 departments have been placed on orange alert for the heat. Firefighters continue to fight fires, in particular, in the Gironde department, where 7,300 hectares have gone up in smoke without causing casualties. One fire broke out in the south of Bordeaux, the other near the Dune du Pilat, a tourist destination much loved by the French.

Thanking the work of firefighters and area prefects, Macron expressed solidarity “with the thousands of fellow countrymen evacuated in recent days”, with “the anguish that such a situation entails”: Since Tuesday, over 10,000 people have been evacuated from campsites located near the Dune du Pilat and the village adjacent to the military base of Cazaut, in Gironde. The president also paid tribute to “European solidarity” in the framework of the European Civil Protection Mechanism (Mepc) “thanking, in particular, Greece, which made available” the devices “, which arrived this morning, but also from Spain. and Italy.
