France: new evacuations in the Gironde due to fires

(ANSA) – BORDEAUX, JUL 17 – New evacuations are underway in these hours in the French department of Gironde in front of the advance of the fire that has resumed its run making the work of the firefighters “extremely difficult”, six days after the start of these gigantic fires which devastated more than 11,000 hectares of vegetation.

In the Landiras sector the “authorities are evacuating the inhabitants of the municipality of Cabanac, with 2,100 people,” wrote the prefecture on Twitter. According to the firefighters, these new preventive evacuations bring to “16,200” the number of vacationers who have had to leave since Tuesday.

In Teste-de-Buch “the situation is getting worse. The fire has reached the sea and is heading south”, the prefecture added in a second tweet, which asked for “extreme caution”.

On the social networks, Internet users have published photos and videos, taken from the sea, of the huge “30 meters high” fire that devours the beach of the lagoon, south of the dune du Pilat.

The fire should not reach the Landes department because the wind would have to turn west and north “, said Lieutenant Colonel Arnaud Mendousse. (ANSA).
