India: parliament and states vote to elect president

(ANSA) – NEW DELHI, JUL 18 – Voting is underway throughout India for the election of the new President, the 15th in the history of independent India; the result will be announced on 21 July.

Those entitled to vote are 4,800: in addition to the 1,086 members of the two Houses of the country, who vote in New Delhi, the parliamentarians of the Legislative Assemblies of the States and of the Territorial Units present themselves to the polling stations in their respective constituencies.

Two candidates: Droupadi Murmu, 64, presented by the BJP, the majority party and other formations that support the government, and Yashwant Sinha, 84, indicated by the opposition coalition.

Droupadi Murmu is the favorite: she is the first candidate of tribal origin in the history of the country, and, if elected, she will be the second Indian woman to hold the highest office in the state.

The Indian President is essentially a guarantee figure: while the executive power is entrusted to the Premier, the President guides the process of forming the government, and can refer some measures to the Chambers. (HANDLE).
