Europeans have been dealing with forest fires and high temperatures for days. This Monday, the 18th, the authorities of the Spain reported that two people died as a result of these events. That announcement comes a day after Europe reached more than a thousand dead from heat. Other countries are also dealing with the same situation and, for scientists, there is a direct relationship between heat waves and climate change, as greenhouse gas emissions increase in intensity, duration and frequency. The authorities predict that Monday will be the “hottest day for the west”, with temperatures that can exceed 40ºC in the regions of Brittany, Lower Normandy, Aquitaine and western Occitania. This extreme heat puts countries on red alert and poses a “risk to life”, according to the local meteorological agency.

In Spain, about 20 wildfires were still active and out of control in different parts of the country, from south to north, on Sunday. In Galicia, fires destroyed about 4,500 hectares during the week, according to authorities. And in the province of Malaga, in Andalusia (south), firefighters managed to stabilize a fire in the Mijas mountain range, which destroyed at least 2,000 hectares, local authorities reported. On Sunday, the town of Don Benito, near Badajoz (west), recorded the highest in the country so far, with 43.4ºC, and Portugalpresented a “maximum”, “very high”, or “high” risk of registering fires, however, it was the first time since July 8 that temperatures in the country did not exceed 40ºC.

In Greece, another country where fires have been declared in recent days, the authorities decided to evacuate seven villages, preventively, in an area of Rethymno, on the island of Crete. The local Civil Defense has already reported that the fire declared on Friday on this island is under control. According to the meteorological agency Météo-France, 51 departments were under orange surveillance, 15 under the red one, the highest, due to rising thermometers. “The heat is rising, the heat wave is spreading across the country,” warned the same agency.
