(ANSA) – MADRID, JUL 18 – The King of Spain Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez today inaugurated a new “high-speed” railway line in the west of the country: the section connects the cities of Badajoz, Mérida, Cáceres and Plasencia, in the Extremadura region. The event, reports the local press, was nevertheless held amidst the controversies of some of the local citizens, which for years have claimed the need for modern railway connections in the region and considered insufficient.
The new line cost the State about 1.5 billion euros and will shorten the journey time Badajoz-Madrid by about 50 minutes, according to official press releases.
However, for the moment it is not a complete high-speed line, explains the Efe agency: in some places, the trains will not be able to exceed 100 kilometers per hour.
“Today we take the first step on a path that cannot be stopped. We will ensure that the high-speed train will cross the region in the shortest possible time, connecting it with dignity to the rest of Spain”, said the premier.
