(ANSA) – QUITO, JUL 18 – Thirteen inmates lost their lives in a fight in an Ecuadorian prison, which also caused two injuries, according to the public body responsible for prisons, SNAI.
Staff from Bellavista prison, in the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas, about 80 km west of Quito, “reported 13 dead and 2 injured inmates,” SNAI tweeted.
Snai added that it had “regained control” of this prison, “with the support of the police and the army”. In this same structure, last May, 44 prisoners had died during clashes between rival gangs. During this uprising, 220 prisoners fled. Almost all of them were then taken over.
Clashes, often extremely violent, are recurrent in Ecuadorian prisons. According to the government, rival gangs of drug traffickers, infiltrated or controlled by Mexican cartels, are waging an all-out war for control of overcrowded prisons, a war the authorities have so far been unable to stem.
