Kenya: USA and China compete for 5G

(ANSA) – NAIROBI, 19 JUL – Two memorandums of understanding signed one month later with Washington and Beijing have made Kenya a field of technological confrontation between the US and China. Reason for the dispute, according to the financial pages of the Kenyan newspaper The Standard: the control of 5G in the country and related technology and infrastructures, including the development of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

Less than three weeks before the elections in Kenya, the two powers that have bet on Nairobi are trying to step over each other to have more influence with the new administration in the five years to come.

It started China with an agreement between its giant Huawei and the Kenyan Communications Authority in June. Then, last week, the US Department of Commerce signed a strategic partnership that aims to promote measures to support digital inclusion, including accessibility and consumer protection online.

“Post-election Kenya – comments The Standard – will be a battlefield for supremacy in the 5G market in East Africa”. (HANDLE).
