(ANSA) – TOKYO, 20 JUL – New surge in Covid infections in Tokyo, updating the maximum since the beginning of February with 20,400 cases.
Record numbers also in various prefectures of the country, from Gifu to Hyogo, in central Japan, and on the island of Okinawa in the extreme south of the archipelago. Highs of concern also in the other major metropolis, Osaka, with an estimated 22,000 infections in the last 24 hours, and in Kanagawa prefecture, south of the capital. A trend that saw an unexpected acceleration due to the spread of the BA.5 variant after a period of relative calm experienced until the month of June.
