(ANSA) – WELLINGTON, JUL 21 – Winds up to 80 kilometers per hour and waves as high as buildings hit the east coast of New Zealand, forcing airports and seaports to stop operations and damaging at least one building.
Weather conditions prompted Wellington Transportation authorities to cut off connections Ferry departures between the northern and southern islands were suspended after New Zealand’s MetService recorded a huge 10-meter wave in the harbor.
Bad weather made several roads impassable, caused floods and power outages, and the wind ripped up the roof of a café in Lower Hutt. About 3,000 residents were stranded in Wellington’s coastal suburb of Eastbourne due to flooded streets. A badly damaged catamaran was seen floating in nearby Lowry Bay. (HANDLE).
