Ukraine: summer camps for her children across the EU

(ANSA) – BRUSSELS, JULY 22 – Summer camps welcome Ukrainian children to European cities, including Rome. This is the initiative launched by the European Committee of the Regions, which in the April plenary welcomed the proposal of Vitaly Klitschko, mayor of Kiev and president of the Association of Ukrainian cities (AUC).

Over 500 children welcomed into summer camps organized by members or supported by the Committee come from primary and secondary schools and are currently displaced in Ukraine. The camps, which last from ten days to three weeks, will be hosted by European local and regional authorities throughout the summer.

Rome responded to the appeal, with Mayor Roberto Gualtieri who welcomed 36 minors in the capital accompanied by four operators from 2 to 15 July, thanks also to the collaboration with the Italian Red Cross. Other camps are in France, Germany, Latvia, Poland, Romania and Spain.

The costs of the camps are borne by the participating Municipalities and Regions together with public, private and civil society partners. In some cases, AUC and Ukrainian partners cover the costs of transporting the children to their destination. (HANDLE).
