(ANSA) – GOMA, JUL 26 – In the Democratic Republic of Congo at least five people were killed and dozens injured during anti-UN protests in the eastern part of the country. Government spokesman Patrick Muyaya said on Twitter as riots spread.
Hundreds of people blocked the streets yesterday and chanted hostile slogans before storming the headquarters of Monusco, a UN peacekeeping mission in the country, and a supply base in Goma, the main city of the North Kivu province.
The UN peacekeepers are accused of incapacity against the approximately 120 armed groups active in the region, among which M23 stands out, which has resumed its deadly attacks.
Protesters broke windows and looted valuables, while helicopters flew UN personnel fleeing the headquarters and security forces fired tear gas at the protesting people. Muyaya specified that “at least five people (have) died, about 50 injured” during the riots.
Security forces fired “warning shots” at protesters to stop attacks on UN personnel, he added. The riots continued today, with shooting near the refueling base and demonstrators also taking to the streets in the cities of Beni and Butembo, according to witnesses. The soldiers were deployed on the road leading to the Monusco base located in Beni, 350 kilometers north of Goma, and dispersed demonstrators who had gathered in front of the UN mission headquarters in Butembo, as reported by other sources.
