Political crisis in Bulgaria, towards early elections

(ANSAmed) – SOFIA, JULY 28 – We are moving towards early elections in Bulgaria, the fourth since April last year, after this morning the Socialist Party (Bsp) handed over the mandate to form a executive within the current Parliament.

It was the third and final attempt, according to the Constitution, after the unsuccessful ones of the major political force in the Bulgarian unicameral parliament (240 seats), the liberals of ‘Let’s continue the change’ of outgoing premier Kiril Petkov, and the conservatives of Boyko’s Gerb. Borissov, former Prime Minister of Bulgaria.

“The ruling coalition bequeaths the chaos in the energy sector to the interim cabinet, the heaviest legacy of the outgoing government,” the president told BSP officials. The reaction of the leader of the BSP, a coalition partner party, and minister of the economy of the outgoing government, Kornelia Ninova, spoke with journalists after meeting with Radev. “The BSP is not responsible for what is happening in the energy sector, and we do not accept the criticism of the president,” said Ninova, saying that “Radev belongs to the circle of those who overthrew the ruling coalition”. Although there are no concrete terms in the Bulgarian constitution, it is expected that next week the president will dissolve the parliament, hold early elections (probably in early October) and appoint an interim government.
