France: criticism of meeting between Prince Bin Salman and Macron

The controversy is mounting in France for the visit of the Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman who will be received this evening at the Elysée for a working dinner with President Emmanuel Macron. This is his first visit to the European Union (yesterday the stop in Athens), since the assassination of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. The crown prince arrived last night at the Parisian airport of Orly, welcomed by the Minister of Economy, Bruno Le Maire.
Former green presidential candidate, Yannick Jadot, thunders against Macron’s decision to receive him in the presidential palace. “What will be on the dinner menu between Emmanuel Macron and MSB? Exactly the opposite of what is needed do “, denounces on Twitter the MEP of Europe Ecologie Les Verts (EELV).
Criticism of Salman’s visit was also voiced by human rights organizations such as Amnesty International. “I am deeply disturbed by the visit, for what this means for our world and for Jamal (Khashoggi) and people like him,” Amnesty’s general secretary Agnes Callamard told France Presse, describing the crown prince as a man who “does not tolerate dissent”. For his part, Aurore Bergé, group leader of the macronist party at the National Assembly (Renaissance) believes “it is important that the French president be able to receive those who are in fact his interlocutors (…) All the more so in a context that we know, linked to the Ukrainian crisis and the important energy challenges we have before us, “he told Franceinfo.
