Turkey: average, $ 15bn from Russia per nuclear power plant

(ANSA) – ISTANBUL, JULY 29 – Russia will send Turkey 15 billion dollars for the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, the country’s first nuclear power plant, under construction since 2018, of which the total cost is 20 billion. Bloomberg reports that the money will be used over the next two years and Russian state-owned nuclear company Rosatom Corp. has already sent $ 5 billion to the Turkish-based construction company Akkuyu Nuclear Jsc last week.

Money transfers of the same amount are expected to continue this week and next to prevent the project from being blocked by sanctions against Moscow in the future due to the conflict with Kiev. According to a Turkish official quoted by Bloomberg, the operation is a sign of gratitude on the part of Russia after an agreement was signed in Istanbul last week between Moscow, Kiev, Ankara and the UN to unblock the export of grain from Ukraine.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had recently made it known, after a conversation in Tehran with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, that Ankara and Moscow would continue their collaboration on the Akkuyu plant. The opening of the plant is scheduled for 2023 or 2026. (ANSA).
