Burma: military arrest Japanese citizen

(ANSA) – YANGON, JUL 31 – A Japanese citizen was arrested in Burma because he was accused of taking part in a demonstration against the military coup regime. This was revealed by the Japanese and Burmese media.

The arrest of 26-year-old director Toru Kubota took place in Yangon, the country’s economic capital. The Japanese, the media said, was near where a demonstration was taking place and was arrested along with two Burmese citizens.

He is not the first foreign citizen to be jailed since the military coup of February 1, 2021 that ended a decade of democracy in blood. Last year, another Japanese director Yuki Kitazumi was arrested while filming on the crackdown and then released on May 21, 2021 under the wave of international pressure. It is estimated that at least 48 journalists ended up in prison in Burma following the military coup. (HANDLE).
