Congo: UN peacekeepers open fire, two dead

Two people were killed and others injured after UN peacekeepers opened fire in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on the border with Uganda. This was stated by Monusco, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the country.
“During this incident, the soldiers of the intervention brigade of the Monusco force returning from leave opened fire at the border post for inexplicable reasons and forced their way through”, specified the mission in Kasindi, a Congolese border town. .
The video of the incident, shared on social media, shows men, at least one in police uniform and another in army uniform, advancing towards the UN convoy stuck behind a closed bar in Kasindi. After an argument, the peacekeepers opened fire before opening the gate, moving forward and continuing to shoot as people scatter or hide. Barthelemy Kambale Siva, representative of the governor of North Kivu in Kasindi, previously spoke of eight people, including two policemen, who were “seriously injured”, but did not explain why the UN convoy was prevented from crossing the barrier.
Last week in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo there were demonstrations calling for the departure of Monusco, accused of not doing enough against the more than one hundred armed groups active in the region. 19 people were killed in the riots, including three blue helmets.
