Gas: Borrell, EU prepares for total cut off flows from Moscow

(ANSA) – BRUSSELS, AUGUST 01 – “Europe is facing a perfect storm: energy prices are rising, economic growth is falling and winter is coming. The Kremlin uses energy as a political weapon . We must prepare for a possible gas cut, mainly through savings, diversification and solidarity between us “. The High Representative of the EU, Josep Borrell, writes this in a post on his blog in which he calls for unity and solidarity between EU countries in the energy sector to ‘save’ next winter.

Europe, explains Borrell, “is faced with a dilemma: it must balance its short-term goals – freeing itself from Russian oil and gas during the winter – with its long-term net zero emissions goals in the within the Green Deal. It makes no sense to pretend that doing it is easy, cheap or uncompromising. But it is possible, if you invest seriously in energy saving, renewables and solidarity, both at home and in the world “.

“Winter comes every year, but what we face promises to be exceptional” and “hard”, warns the Spanish politician, who warns of the “real uncertainty that the EU will have enough gas” and “a what price”. The EU must prepare “for all scenarios, including the one in which Russia completely cuts off supplies, when it wants”, continues Borrell, who asks governments for the solidarity necessary to “develop a true Energy Union.” (ANSA ).
