New daily peak of migrant landings in the UK

(ANSA) – LONDON, 02 AUG – New daily peak of illegal migrants arriving in the United Kingdom from France via the English Channel. This was revealed by the London Ministry of Defense, on the basis of data recorded on Monday, with 696 “illegal immigrants” surveyed, a record of landings in the 24 hours since the beginning of 2022.

The estimate exceeds that of 651 certified on 13 April. The nearly 700 migrants have been identified on board 14 smugglers’ boats engaged in human trafficking. This is an embarrassing indication for the conservative government of the resigning Boris Johnson, as for the two candidates to succeed him, both leading ministers in his team in recent years: the now very favorite Liz Truss, holder of the Foreign Affairs in office, and Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer until July. Both Johnson and his would-be heirs are in fact pledged to promise a severe post-Brexit squeeze on illegal immigration (the flow of which London attributes at least in part to insufficient controls leaving Paris) that is struggling to materialize. Even after the announcement in recent months of a highly contested plan agreed with the government of Rwanda for the dispatch for deterrent purposes to collection centers made available for payment by the remote African country of contingents of “illegal” asylum seekers awaiting a response from the Kingdom.

A plan that was privately criticized according to the media even by Prince Charles, heir to the throne – as well as by opposition parties, various associations for the protection of human rights and the UN – but which Truss and Sunak ensure they want to continue. And which, however, remains on paper for now, after the postponement of the first flight imposed by international appeals in the face of international justice, despite the repeated proclamations of the Minister of the Interior, Priti Patel, Tory super hawk.
