Galapagos, land iguanas born again on Santiago Island

(ANSA) – QUITO, 02 AUG – After almost two centuries, terrestrial iguanas have returned to be born on the island of Santiago, in the Ecuadorian Galapagos. This was announced today via Twitter by the Minister of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition of Ecuador, Gustavo Manrique.

In his tweet, Manrique recalled that the last recording made of a healthy population of these pink iguanas was made by Charles Darwin in 1835.

“Today – concluded the minister – we are enthusiastically experiencing the ecological awakening of an island that has been seriously damaged in the past” ..

For its part, the newspaper El Universo of Guayaquil writes that the direction of the Galapagos National Park (Dpng), with the aim of continuing the ecological restoration of the island of Santiago, has constantly transferred, since 2019, 3,143 terrestrial iguanas (Conolophus subcristatus ), adequately identifiable, from the island of Seymour Norte.

However, the newspaper continues, until recently there was no trace of their reproduction in the natural habitat.

But, according to the paper, park experts and scientific consultants have explored some 36 square kilometers and found iguanas of this species of all ages, “which shows that they are breeding successfully.”

The recovery of the ecological balance on the island of Santiago began in 2002 with the execution of the Isabela project for the eradication of goats and pigs, non-native species that contributed to the temporary extinction of pink iguanas.
